The 26th Athletic Meet Opening Address by the Principal

第二十六屆陸運會開幕禮校長致辭

Opening Address by Ms Tang Wai Chun, Agnes, Our Principal

Date: 8th December, 2010

Good morning, teachers and students,

Just like the years in the past, we gathered at the Kwai Chung Sports Ground to have our annual Athletic Meet.  Our school has always attached great importance to sports development.  With three main objectives in mind, we are playing an active role in promoting sports activities.  Firstly, we aim at encouraging our students to take an active part in sports and build up a strong constitution in a bid to develop a healthier body and a more vibrant life.  Secondly, we aim at encouraging our students to tap their potentials and to develop a strong sense of self-improvement.  Thirdly, through participation in a good range of sports events and diversified extra-curricular activities, we aim at developing among our students a balanced attainment for whole-person development.

In achieving these aims, our school fully supports sports development as well as training up more athletes which is demonstrated in the number of champions our students have achieved in the recently held Inter-school Swimming Competitions and Athletic Meets.  Students are offered every opportunity to give full play to their gifts and talents.

On 27th November, I and two students from F.6 have the privilege to attend the Closing Ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games.  We were overjoyed by the spectacular success of the Chinese Team as well as the Hong Kong Team.  The Chinese Team amassing an overwhelming of 416 medals, among which 199 were gold, topped the medal list.  On the other hand, Hong Kong athletes got 40 medals including 8 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze, achieving a best-ever result at the Asian Games and proving that local athletes have well-qualified calibre for international sports competitions.  We may have to pay our special tribute to our brilliant cyclists, Wong Kam Po & Wong Wan Yiu for their unfailing effort to excel.  We are proud of their achievement and have much to learn from their determination and perseverance as well as exemplary sportsmanship.  Brilliant achievement of our athletes has showcased the passion, the commitment and the “can-do” spirit of all Hong Kong people.  In this Opening Ceremony, the spirited athletes and uniform groups clearly display before us the same spirit, i.e., not to give up and do keep on trying!

Lastly, may I wish all athletes excellent performance and tremendous success in the upcoming events.  Now I declare the 26th Athletic Meet open.  Thank you.
